PREPARING FOR EMS AFTER CALLING 911

If you have called 911 and are waiting for paramedics to arrive, there are several steps you can take to prepare and assist them upon their arrival:

  1. Stay calm and provide accurate information: When speaking to the 911 operator, remain calm and provide clear and accurate information about the situation. Describe the nature of the emergency, the location, and any other relevant details. Follow any instructions provided by the operator.

  2. Create a clear path: Clear the area around the patient to provide easy access for the paramedics. Remove any obstacles, such as furniture or clutter, that could hinder their ability to reach the patient quickly and safely.

  3. Turn on lights: If it's dark, turn on lights in the area where the patient is located. This will help the paramedics see clearly and assess the situation more effectively.

  4. Gather important information: Collect any pertinent information about the patient, such as medical history, allergies, medications, and contact details of family members or caregivers. This information will assist the paramedics in providing appropriate care.

  5. Unlock doors or gates: If the patient is inside a locked building or gated area, ensure that all doors and gates are unlocked or accessible. This will help paramedics reach the patient without delay.

  6. Stay with the patient: If it is safe to do so, stay with the patient until the paramedics arrive. Offer reassurance and comfort, and monitor their condition if you are able. If the situation worsens or changes significantly, inform the 911 operator immediately.

  7. Prepare necessary documents: If you have any medical documents or records readily available, gather them and have them ready for the paramedics. This may include documents related to the patient's medical conditions, allergies, or any existing medical devices they use.

Remember, the primary responsibility during an emergency is to keep yourself and the patient safe. While these steps can help prepare for the arrival of paramedics, it is important to follow the guidance of the 911 operator and prioritize the immediate needs of the patient.
